While other young women involved in the Twilight cult phenomenon might bask in the glow of the paparazzi's flashbulbs, Nikki Reed is not one of them. In fact, the 21-year-old Reed, known for making her mark on both television (The O.C.) and film (Mini's First Time, Last Day of Summer, Chain Letter, Lords of Dogtown and Thirteen,) would rather find a room of her own far away from the Twilight glare. To the surprise of no one, it turns out the folks who hated J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown aren't into the Stephenie Meyer cinematic canon, either. "This film is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message and as such should be of concern," warns the Vatican's culture council leader, Monsignor Franco Perazzolo, in a statement timed to the release of New Moon . "This theme of vampires in Twilight combines a mixture of excesses that, as ever, is aimed at young people and gives a heavy esoteric e

The new Twilight vampire movie took a record $26.3m (£15.9m) in midnight showings at North American box offices, studio Summit Entertainment has said. The fan frenzy regarding Stephenie Meyer's four-book series, a romantic fantasy of star-crossed lovers in a supernatural setting involving vampires and werewolves, has become a phenomenon. Excited "Twi-hards," as hard-core fans are known, showed up in attire and even temporary tattoos proclaiming their allegiance to either teenage Bella Swan's brooding vampire soulmate Edward Cullen or her best friend Jacob Black, who becomes part of a love triangle in "New Moon," the darkest tale of the four.
